Junior Laptop COW!

Wahoo!! The Junior area of the school has it's very own laptop trolley called a 'C.O.W' (Computers On Wheels).


All classes get to use the Laptop C.O.W for a whole day every fortnight.
The children at ROP's are computer pro's and they love using the coll laptops!

ALL BLACKS MUFTI DAY!

Don't forget to wear you Black & White for this Friday's Mufti Day (18th November) And this time don't bring your gold coin! Please bring a bottle for our Food Festival Bottle Bank instead! Some ideas for what to bring are: sauces, jams, preserves, lotions, perfumes, shampoos, body wash, bubble bath, drinks etc. Make sure they are new and unopened ready for our Festival next year.

Cornwall Park

See if you can go to Cornwall Park and see the newly born lambs. They are making lots of noise 'baa baa' to tell their Mum's where they are.

As well as lambs, there are calves too.

If you walk through Twin Oak Drive all the daffodils are in flower too.

Sausage Sizzles are back for Term 3

Sausage Sizzles are back!

The first one for Term 3 will be:

Firewise!

Today the Year 1 & 2 children met Firefighter Matt. He came to talk to us about being Fire Safety and we all showed him how Firewise we are! We saw how quickly a fire can start and talked about what to do if a fire ever happened. We practiced 'Get down! Get low! Get out fast!', we called out 'Fire! Fire! Fire!' loudly and clearly and met at 'Our safe meeting place.'

Well done Year 1 and 2- you are a Firewise crew!!

TERM 3- 2011 (Year 2)

What is happening for this term in YEAR 2??

They will have two sessions with each teacher on the following: Miss George: Upbeat Music Programme, Miss McClue: Dance, Miss Fisher: Flax Weaving, Mrs Hardie-Boys: Musical instruments, Mrs Paul: Drama and we are very lucky to also have the talent of Jeanette Franklyn who will be taking each class for two sessions about instruments and the orchestra and musical notation. Parent Helpers Needed!

The Rugby Cup Athon needs your help!

On Thursday 23rd June the school will be having a sports and quiz day and we need parent helpers to assist us, support us and enjoy the day with us.

Please contact your child's classroom teacher or return your parent helper form if you are able to help out.

Travelwise WALK and WHEEL to School Day

On Wednesday 22nd June we are having a walk and ride to school day. On Tuesday 21st children will bring home a token. If they come to school in a 'travelwise way' on Wednesday morning they can drop their token in a special box at Cutfields Corner before school. The tokens will be tallied and the best class will be awarded the Travelwise Trophy. The 'Auckland City Transport Mascot' will be present, giving out spot prizes so walk, scooter, cycle, car pool, bus, train or drop and walk your way to school on Wednesday the 22nd June!!

Royal Oak Primary School HUI

Next Wednesday evening (22nd June) we are holding a Hui as part of our consultation with Maori families. The evening begins at 5:45pm and concludes at 7:30pm. If you have not received an invitation and would like to attend or would like more information please let us know asap.

Auckland Botanic Gardens

It was fantastic! Nearly all the Year One children went to the Botanic Gardens yesterday or today in Manurewa. The bus trip was exciting and then we had a lesson with a special Garden person who helped us plant our own bean. We also planted seedlings in the ground and swept up the yard too! The gardens are huge and we walked and walked around the big lake, saw ducks and so many different plants and trees.
The day was very interesting and it was fun being with all the other children too.

LINES FOR LOUIS!

Louis is a Year 3 at our school and he has Type 1 Diabetes.

He has to monitor his insulin levels often and throughout the day and be medicated as needed. Louis now has the opportunity to have a pump that would do all of this for him and make life much easier. Unfortunately the cost for the pump alone is $10,000 and then an ongoing cost of $300 per month and there is no government subsidy....

Royal Oak Primary wants to support the fundraising project for Louis to enable him

to have the freedom of other children at our school.

Mrs Bruce has therefore organised a mufti day for Friday 3rd June called 'Lines for Louis'. Please come to school wearing lines, checks or stripes and bring a donation to help the fundraising.

NZ MUSIC MONTH

This month has been NZ Music Month!

We have been celebrating at Royal Oak Primary School by:

Listening to and singing lots of songs by kiwi artists, making music together with musical instruments, creating our own instruments like shakers and last of all learning the song called 'Things to Remember'.

This song is so special and important because it won the 'Write a Song for NZ Music Month' Competition! It was written by some Year 5 & 6 children at Newton central School-Awesome!

Grasshopper Tennis

The Year 2 classes are all participating in Grasshopper Tennis every Monday for four weeks.

So far we have been learning to balance the ball in different places of our racket, bounce the ball between the ground and our racket and on top of our racket. We have been doing lots of rolling, hitting and passing the ball in pairs and we have also been trying to master 'sticky ball'!

Sausage Sizzle

Yay! Welcome back to the ROPS Sausage Sizzles!

Thanks to some wonderful parent helpers and the senior classes- the sausage sizzles at our school have returned!

These 'sizzles' will take place every 2nd Monday, starting on Monday 16th May.

Special Visitors to ROPS

Today three very special visitors arrived at our School. They have come from the Education Review Office to see all the wonderful teaching and learning at Royal Oak Primary School. Our visitors are here with us for the week and we hope they have a wonderful time meeting and seeing all our clever children.

RIPPA RUGBY

Rippa Rugby is the new game for primary schools. It is a very safe, non-contact, easy to play game for both boys and girls alike. Best of all it's fun and exciting for all involved.

While the rules are simple and the game easy to learn, Rippa Rugby will promote excellent ball handling and running skills, and give all kids a chance to participate in our national game.

The New Zealand Rugby Union is proud to recommend Rippa Rugby and we are sure it will give the kids in your school a fun safe and enjoyable sporting experience.

FLYING AROUND THE JUNIOR SCHOOL

Today we participated in our 4th travel date for 'Flying around the Junior School'. Things can get quite busy with boarding the planes, air traffic control and passport checking! So today Mrs Tataurangi stopped by a few of the 'airports' and helped at immigration. She was certainly making sure the travellers had the correct details on their passports before allowing them through to that country! Here are photos of her stamping some passports. Next Thursday is our final planned day of travel, catch you then!

Year 6 Camp this week

Today the Year 6 students left for camp- we walked out to the front of the school to wave them off they all looked very excited!! We hope you have a wonderful time away Year 6!!!

Flying Around the Junior School

Year 1 & 2 children are currently learning about NZ, what it means to be a NZer and all the different cultures that make up a 'Kiwi' today. To do this we wanted to explore some of these NZ Cultures that make up our country and our school community. So each of the Year 1 & 2 teachers selected a country/ ethnicity reflected in our community to share with the children. The children then created their own 'passports' and prepared to 'fly around the junior school'.

Over four Thursday afternoons the children will visit 9 different destinations and receive a stamp in their passport for each one. As you can imagine this has been extremely exciting!! The children have already 'travelled' to 4 countries and participated in dance, song, art, learning greetings/counting etc and looking at native dress and artefact's.

Attached to this post is an example of children visiting one destination- China. Here they looked at dress, lanterns, books, posters, watched a traditional Chinese dance, learnt about the flag, capital city and greeting and attempted to use chopsticks!

Te Reo with Whaea Hardie Boys

Over the the next couple of terms all children at Royal Oak Primary School will be participating in a Te Reo programme with Mrs Hardie Boys and Miss Sowerby. This takes place in the 'Whare Kura' or School house. currently situated in Room 2.

The Year 1 & 2 classes have a session every second Wednesday with Whaea Hardie Boys and during this time they learn greetings and phrases, dances and songs, names of things and other classroom activities. We are so lucky to have these teachers- what a valuable resource!

Kia Ora!

Red and Black Day!

Today the whole school came dressed in Red and Black and brought along a gold coin donation. This was all to support the people (and schools) effected by the devastating earthquake in Christchurch on the 22nd of February. It was amazing to see everyone showing their love and support for Christchurch by wearing their red and black. Altogether we raised over $2,000 and our wonderful board matched our contribution taking us up to $4,584.60!!!!

Well done Royal Oak Primary- I am sure Christchurch will really appreciate your efforts!

Cool to be Kind Show

Today we all got to watch a show called "Its cool to be kind" by Marty Rochfort. It was an anti-bullying show which encouraged us to take more responsibility for our actions, show more tolerance, exercise more self control and show more care and concern for others.

The New P.E Shed

Work began today on our new P.E shed- the diggers came in to break up the concrete and the shed will arrive soon. It will be great to have one place to neatly keep all our equipment!

It was exciting to watch the work start...but very noisy!

Year 2 Netballers at the ROPS Netball Gathering

On Tuesday 21st of September the Royal Oak Primary School Netball players met in the hall for an annual prizegiving.

This year an enthusiastic group of nearly 4o Year 2 children were involved! Over this term and last they all participated in ball skills and drills every Thursday lunchtime and even built up to learning the court formation and playing games. The students really enjoyed taking part in this programme and we would really like to thank Nicola Mills who ran the programme and her assistants: Nicky Russell, Belinda Lee, Megan Parke, Kelly Flux, Sara McIntosh, Kerry Warn- without their wonderful help and support this wouldnt have been possible.

We recognised both parents and children who were involved in this programme and each child got a certificate and a ball to encourage them to continue to practise and play the sport.

I can't wait to see them on the court next year!!

GAMESATHON!

Today was a great day at Royal Oak Primary School!

The whole school participated in a fundraising 'Gamesathon'.

The rain (mostly) held off for us all to get out alongside our buddy classes and participate in all sorts of fun games and activities.

We were all assigned a country from the Commonwealth and we represented our countries by wearing their colours and making banners and flags as well as other fun things such as wigs, hats, face paint, lavalavas and even feather boas!

A great time was had by all and a huge thanks goes out to Mrs Jamieson and her team of wonderful teachers who organised the huge event for us. And another big thanks goes out to all our family and friends who sponsored us!

Year 2 Folk Dance Festival

Yesterday, Tuesday the 24th of August, all the Year 2 students and teachers travelled to the La Bouree Folk Dance Festival at the ASB Stadium. The students were there to perform 14 dances that they have learned and practiced several times a week over the last couple of months. The Royal Oak Year 2's performed alongside many other schools and they were just fantastic!! They represented Royal Oak in such a positive manner and a great day was had by all who attended!

Welcome to Book Week at Royal Oak Primary School!

We have got lots of great things happening this week to celebrate our annual 'Book Week'. This morning we have all enjoyed a great visit from author Tim Tipene who talked to us all about 'taming our taniwha' (photo attached). We will also have teachers reading to a range of different classes over book week. Then of course we have our great Book Parade on Friday!! Don't forget to dress up as your favourite book character!!

Te Wiki O Te Reo Maori

This week is Maori Language Week.

Staff and students will be encouraged to use Maori words and phrases and greetings as much as possible over the week. We will also be enjoying Maori dance, song and activities as well as a concert from our Culture Club on Friday. Join in with us!

Singing in the rain

Hurrah!

The heavy rain was such fun this afternoon. The playground had turned into a lake and the water was threatening to come into Room 4. It was so exciting that we had to stop learning about fractions and hide under the verandah trying not to dip our toes into the lake outside.

Luckily two of our well prepared boys had gumboots and they waded out to the deepest part just checking there were no whales to be found. Then we made an origami boat and watched it float off on the waves gently fanned by the wind.

We couldn't stop giggling and making lots of noise! School is so much fun!

It was wonderful to see everyone 'heart jamming' this afternoon. We certainly looked very bright and happy.

I wonder how much money we will raise for the Heart Foundation?

Thanks to everyone that made such an effort to dress up in red!

Heart Jam!!

We are very excited as we have arrived this morning to see a sea of red!!

WHY? Because it's HEART JAM time! Come and join us at 2:15 in the playground and see us jump around to raise money for the Heart Foundation.

Reminder that the Year 2 classes are visiting the Stardome and your child should have brought a permission slip today, outlining the fee and dates etc.
